What Is renBTC?
What is renBTC? renBTC is a 1:1 wrapped-Bitcoin ERC-20 that Renbridge minted through RenVM so Bitcoin could be represented on EVM chains.
renBTC was the Bitcoin-backed token associated with RenVM. It was designed as a redeemable representation of native BTC, similar in purpose to other wrapped tokens, but with a different custody and minting model.
What exactly is renBTC?
renBTC is an ERC-20 token issued by RenVM to represent Bitcoin on EVM-compatible blockchains. In the original Renbridge model, a user deposited native BTC, RenVM observed the deposit, and an equivalent amount of renBTC was minted on the destination chain.
The intended peg was 1:1 with BTC. That does not make renBTC the same asset as native Bitcoin; it is a tokenized claim whose reliability depends on the bridge system and redemption path.
How was renBTC minted through Renbridge?
Renbridge connected the user-facing flow to RenVM. After a user sent BTC to a generated gateway address and the Bitcoin transaction reached the required confirmations, RenVM Darknodes coordinated the mint on the selected EVM chain.
Minting was designed to be decentralized and permissionless compared with merchant-based wrapped Bitcoin models. The reverse flow burned renBTC and released native BTC.
What was renBTC used for?
renBTC was used to bring Bitcoin liquidity into decentralized finance. Users could trade BTC-backed liquidity on decentralized exchanges, supply assets to lending markets, or participate in liquidity pools that supported renBTC.
Is renBTC the same as native Bitcoin?
No. Native BTC exists on the Bitcoin network. renBTC is a wrapped representation on smart contract chains, and its usefulness depends on bridge redemption, market liquidity, and protocol status. That distinction is central to any wrapped-Bitcoin asset, including custodial and non-custodial designs described in general guides to wrapped Bitcoin.
What should users verify about renBTC?
Users should verify current bridge status, token contracts, liquidity, redemption routes, and official sources before interacting with any renBTC or Renbridge-branded interface. A token can continue to exist on-chain even when the original bridge process has changed, paused, or ended.
Status note
RenVM 1.0 was shut down in December 2022 after Alameda Research collapsed. Minting and burning of renBTC were disabled, and users were urged to bridge assets back to native chains. Do not assume current operation, safety, or official domain status without independent verification.
